The “iCity” initiative is supported by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) of the HKSAR and organized by Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, with DotAsia Organisation as a Cooperating Partner. iCity is a series of events with a core mission to encourage secondary school students in Hong Kong to consider taking more Information & Communications Technologies (ICT) related courses and to pursue ICT related studies and careers.

Based on university statistics and anecdotal industry observations, it is realized that there is a lack of motivation, especially of high calibre students, to enter ICT field of studies at the university level in Hong Kong. Which in turn results in an increasing stress for the ICT industry to hire qualified entry-level positions locally.

The vision of the iCity initiative is to stimulate the interest of teenagers by highlighting ICT as an agent of change and the decisive factor fuelling the engine of growth in a knowledge-based economy. Students in higher forms are just beginning to become interested in social affairs and are exploring their future roles and responsibilities in the society. The message to encourage them to pursue ICT studies must therefore include not just financial reward in career development, but place emphasis on the power of ICT innovations to induce and influence change in the society and to make a difference.
